ELLYSE PERRY AND THE SOUTHERN STARS WIN THERE FIRST TWENTY20 WORLD CUP On 16 May 2010, the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars won against the New Zealand White Ferns, taking home their first Twenty20 World Cup and crowning Perry player of the match. After winning the toss and deciding to bat first, the team, led by captain Alex Blackwell, struggled to make 106 runs before taking the field. "Our bowling attack has a level-headedness and can get through the challenges in front of them" said Blackwell after the match. "They did that today." In the last over, it came down to Perry's bowling against White Fern batsman, Sophie Devine. Cricket Australia called the calmness of the Aussie teen athlete, "inspiring". "I just wanted to make sure that, whatever happened, the ball didn't go near the boundary," said Perry, going so far as to deflect a big hit from Devine with her foot. "I just wanted to stop it going so far out of the outfield, and luckily enough my big old clumsy foot got in the way." Whilst there is much work still to do for Jessica, this day is one she will never forget! For more information about Jessica and her inspiring journey, visit www.jessicawatson.com.au |

Matt White runner up on Dancing With The Stars Despite topping the ladder most weeks throughout the competition and earning the first perfect score of the series in the Final, Today Tonight host Matt White was runner-up to country music artist Adam Brand in the ninth series of Dancing With The Stars. Matt, Brand and third finalist Kylie Gillies, host of the Morning Show, were required to perform two dance routines in the final before bookies favourite Gillies was eliminated. This left Matt and Brand to dance off in a third freestyle routine, with Matt blowing the judges away with an action packed performance that scored a perfect 10 from all three judges and produced a standing ovation from the studio audience. Matt out scored Brand 30 to 21 in the final routine, however with the viewers votes added, the popular country singer's fan base was too strong and he pipped Matt for the title. Matt congratulated Brand on claiming the disco ball trophy and thanked the other celebrity couples and judges for an amazing experience on the show. Matt was joined by fellow 5 Oceans Media client Layne Beachley, who also starred on the show.

Layne Beachley Pushes Commuters to Make the Most of Now On 25 May 2009, as part of the new Vodafone campaign, seven-time world surfing champion and Vodafone ambassador Layne Beachley did her part to help Sydneysiders "Make the Most of Now". "The campaign is designed to help people realise that they don't have to wait for 'one day'," said Vodafone's General Manager Brand & Communications Danielle Crook. "It celebrates every moment as an opportunity to do more, get more, and be more." During the morning rush, Layne encouraged commuters to take a hint from Vodafone, set the busyness aside, and explore their unfulfilled dream to surf. She provided expert tips on stretches, pointers on standing techniques, and even chances to put all her advice to use on the inflatable surfrider. "Everyone grows up thinking 'one day,'" said Beachley. "One day I'll be an astronaut. One day I'll be a fighter pilot. One day I'll be the world's best surfer. The activity helps people realise that their 'one day' ambitions can still be lived out. They just need a push to make the most of today." Layne Beachley Dominates Monster Wave One of Australia's most infamous surfing communities, the Bra Boys, long ago laid claim to the barrelling surf break just off Sydney's Botany Bay, dubbing it "Ours," but on 14 May 2009, in response to a challenge, Layne Beachley was towed into one of their monster waves leaving everyone watching with their mouths wide open. "I think everyone was looking at me going ‘aw, this is going to be ugly'" said Layne, "and then somehow I just kept so relaxed and calm and just kept looking for a way out and actually found one." Beachley started her session just off the Cape Solander break by paddling into a number of waves breaking only meters from the rock face, and then, with encouragement from her fiancé, Kirk Pengilly, Layne was towed into what became arguably the heaviest wave ridden by a woman surfer. "It exceeded all expectations because I went there expecting to take poundings," she said. "It's pretty gnarly. It's the heaviest wave I've ever surfed in Australia – for sure" As for the Bra Boys, who guided Layne in successfully riding a number waves that day, Layne is more than happy to leave that break to them, "You've gotta say it will always be theirs," she said. "I'm just a visitor."

Jessica Watson Announces Quest to Sail Solo Around the World In Brisbane, on 13 May 2009, Queensland schoolgirl, Jessica Watson, launched both her yacht and her quest to make a non-stop, unassisted sailing voyage around the world. "It's only natural that I will be a little nervous and scared when I am out there," said Jessica, "but that's the great attraction of solo sailing – testing yourself to your limits. Mum and Dad are right behind me and I'm hoping to inspire other young Australian girls to live their dreams." Jessica's dream started when she was just a little girl, sailing dinghies by age eight. Her mum, Julie, read her the story of Jesse Martin, another young solo-sailor, and his voyage around the globe. His story inspired Jessica, and now, in just four months, Jessica will be embarking on her own eight month trip around Cape Horn and across the Southern Ocean. If Jessica succeeds and completes the solo trip, she will become the youngest person, at 16 years old, to sail unassisted and non-stop around the world. "This will be a tough challenge for Jessica, but we really believe she is up to it," said fellow adventurer Don McIntyre. Don, who has completed his own solo trip around the world, has offered his dedication and full support, even providing the boat for Jessica's voyage. "She has a steely determination and is already a skilled and experienced sailor which puts her in a great position to achieve her goal," he said. Jessica is set to depart in September from Brisbane. Until then, she is taking a leave of absence from her studies at Cairns School of Distance Education to focus on preparing herself and her yacht for the voyage. "It's a dream come true." said Jessica. "Now I can start to really focus on the challenge ahead."

Michael Kasprowicz Joins 5 Oceans Media Former Test cricketer Michael Kasprowicz has joined the team at 5 Oceans Media and will head its newly formed cricket division. In his role with 5 Oceans, "Kasper", as he is affectionately known, will assist in the development of the cricket division and act as a mentor for the cricket talent. He will work closely with them to build their brands, set their goals and help them to achieve success on and off the field. Kasprowicz played 38 Tests for Australia over a ten year period, duringthe most successful era of Australian cricket ever. He is second to only the legendary Clarrie Grimmett in terms of his domestic wicket tally. He will be forever remembered from the 2005 Ashes series when his courageous 59 run last wicket partnership with Brett Lee at Edgbaston ended just 3 agonising runs short of victory. After contributing 20, he gloved a contentious catch behind. England leveled the series 1-1 and went on to claim back the Ashes. Kasprowicz sees his involvement with 5 Oceans Media as the next chapter of his career post-cricket. "I am delighted to join 5 Oceans and excited about the potential of this new business division. I have had the opportunity in recent months to see how the 5 Oceans model works and I have been really impressed with their level of professionalism and diversity. With their strengths in media, talent and sponsorship, combined with my 19 years of knowledge from my playing career, we can create opportunities internally for our cricket talent through 5 Oceans' various platforms. This is the unique point of difference that we can offer our clients", said Kasprowicz. "I have been very fortunate to get opportunities to work in the media after my playing career finished. But it is a different world now. Cricket now presents so many more opportunities on a global scale. As a result, it is more important than ever for both young and established cricketers, to have professional representation and the right support structures in place". Andrew Fraser, a director of 5 Oceans Media, welcomed Kasprowicz to the team. "Kasper's reputation is second to none. He is a very popular and well respected figure with not only the players, but also media and sponsors. He is the perfect partner for our expansion into cricket and a wonderful new asset to our business", said Fraser.

LAYNE BEACHLEY: BENEATH THE WAVES By Michael Gordon and Layne Beachley Layne Beachley's story is a testimony to the power of self-belief. It is about the skinny little girl they called 'Gidget' who overcame a king tide of obstacles, from chronic fatigue and depression to debilitating injury and family tragedy, to become an icon in the male-dominated world of competitive surfing. Winner of a record seven women's world championships, she also blazed trails in the mountainous waves of Hawaii's outer reefs, earning respect where it mattered most - in the water. Beneath the surface of the happy, positive public persona is a story of loss, redemption and the search for identity, revealing the intimate details of how Layne and her birth mother, Maggie, found each other twenty-seven years after her birth, the highs and many lows on their quest for reconciliation and the dark secret of Maggie's past. It is also a love story, describing how Layne fell in and out of love with Hawaiian big-wave rider Ken Bradshaw and found true happiness with INXS rock star Kirk Pengilly. Based on extensive interviews with more than thirty central figures, including classmates, friends, family and many of the biggest names in surfing, and written by award-winning journalist Michael Gordon, Layne Beachley: Beneath the Waves is powerful, poignant, moving and unforgettable.
